Review

This camps sits in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy and as part of the Out of Africa Collection, it has long been a favourite in the safari world! Named after the Danish author who wrote Out of Africa, one of the most romantic stories told, the camp today shadows this romance in the midst of the wild and beautiful African savannah.

Location

Karen Blixen Camp sits in the Mara North conservancy and sits on its own private concession, which means that night drives, guided game drives and other activities are possible. The camp sits on the banks of the Mara River, the perfect location to watch the wildlife coming down for a drink!

Layout

The main mess area is raised up on a wooden deck, overlooking the banks of the Mara River to see (and definitely hear) the resident pods of hippo. This area comprises of the reception, the restaurant and the lounge area. The camp also has a pool, with chairs in and out of the sun, and a spa to enjoy one of the most natural locations from a massage bed!

Rooms

Karen Blixen Camp has 22 large and luxury canvas tents which are all sat on a raised wooden platform. On the private veranda, each room has a cushion daybed to embrace an afternoon siesta in. The tents are well appointed and carefully designed, with Persian rugs and cosy armchairs giving the ultimate luxury in the bush. The rooms are all en-suite, with flushing toilets and a great outdoor shower.

Activities

Game drives are mostly done in the Mara North Conservancy, which allows guests the most exclusive and private safari experiences, although game drives into the Masai Mara National Reserve are done on request (often during the months of the great migration). The camp is lucky to also offer guided game walks, bird watching experiences, balloon safaris, community visits and eco camp walks.

Eco-friendliness

The camp focuses heavily on its eco-impact. The eco-walks it offers shows guests how the luxury camp operates, using green technologies such as solar panels, solar water heaters and a waste management programme. They also have a social promise, and employ 120 staff members on a permanent contract ensuring job security, as well as economic, social and medical benefits.

Great variation of safari activities to choose from
