Review

With river crossings metres away, an abundance of game all year round and the close roars of the resident Rekero lion pride the camp, Rekero Camp offers so much excitement in the heart of the Masai Mara, one of the most famous game reserves in Africa! The camp combines a traditional east African décor with a more modern and contemporary layout. The friendly staff immediately welcome guests into Rekero Camp from the moment they arrive, stunning them with the charm and beauty of Kenya’s famous Masai Mara.

Location

Rekero Camp sits in the heart of the Masai Mara Reserve, on the north bank of the Talek River and close to the Mara River. With an infamous crossing point just 150 metres away from the main mess of the camp, and the Mara River a comfortable distance to drive to, the migration period could not be more exciting here at the camp! However, the abundance of water and grasslands provide an area rich in game all year round beyond the months of the migration.

Layout

The tents are sat along the Talek River, situated under the shade in the heat of the day. During the camps closure in April and May, the entire camp’s infrastructure is removed to allow the vegetation underneath the camp and its surrounding landscape to regenerate and strengthen. The main mess tent comprises of a well-furnished and cosy lounge, along with a long dining table to accommodate the communal meals. Rekero’s nine tents are generously spread along the river, with either views of the river or the Mara plains.

Rooms

The Rekero tents are spacious, especially the front-part of the tent with a large private verandah and a collection of armchairs to take in the view. The bathrooms, with hot-water bucket showers and flushing toilets, give the true safari feel, whilst the spacious and modern design give it a fresh and contemporary edge. The décor is slightly outdated and simple, with dark wooden furnishings and a large groundsheet covering the flooring.

Activities

Because of its location, activities in Rekero Camp centre on game viewing. Game drives are offered throughout the day, with morning and late-afternoon drives being the most popular. All-day game drives to the Mara Naboisho Conservacy can also be offered, which give guests a little variation on the landscape and environment of game drives.
